This paper aims to examine the ethics and religion of the characters depicted in Edith Wharton’s Sanctuary (1903). As Aristotle mentioned, morality is necessary for happiness. Educators emphasize the importance of moral education from early childhood through school age. This is affected by environmental influences. There are similarity and difference in the two parts. The similarity is that Dennis and Dick have moral dilemma. The difference falls into two categories. First, Kate attempts to persuade Dennis to make a confession of conscience but fails. Second, Kate succeeds in guiding Dick toward making the right choice by educating him to avoid inheriting his father’s bad blood. Underlying Kate’s decision to marry Denis contains her sacrifice to save an innocent woman and contribute to society. Although Dick possesses Dennis’s superior physical attributes, he triumphs over a similar moral dilemma. This victory is the result of Kate’s ethical and religious upbringing as he confesses that he was able to choose morality because she never let go of his hand. This highlights the importance of an environment and education grounded in ethics and religion, both at home and in school.
