This study analyzes the film Life of Pi, based on Yann Martel’s novel, to explore how literary narratives and religious symbolism operate as mechanisms of healing in contexts of trauma, suffering, and loss. In a contemporary world faced with war, pandemics, natural disasters, and ecological crises, literature and religion have re-emerged as essential discursive frameworks that help individuals make meaning of suffering and pursue psychological recovery. This study examines the film’s tripartite religious structure—Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam—and the dual narrative mode that oscillates between reality and imagination. Through these analyses, the research reveals that religious sensibility and narrative imagination function as powerful forces of healing, enabling the protagonist to reconstruct traumatic experiences into a “story of faith.” By offering an in-depth reading of Life of Pi, this study highlights the complex interrelationship between literature, religion, spirituality, and healing, providing meaningful insights for contemporary healing discourses.

본 연구는 얀 마텔의 소설을 원작으로 한 영화 <라이프 오브 파이>를 대상으 로, 고통·재난·상실의 상황에서 문학적 서사와 종교적 상징 체계가 인간의 트라 우마를 어떻게 치유하는가를 탐구한다. 현대 사회는 전쟁, 팬데믹, 기후 재난 등 복합적 위기를 겪고 있으며, 이러한 상황 속에서 문학과 종교는 인간의 고통을 의미화하고 회복을 가능하게 하는 핵심 담론적 자원으로 새롭게 조명된다. 본 논문은 작품 속에 나타난 힌두교, 기독교, 이슬람의 다중 종교 구조, 사실성과 환상성 등을 분석하여, 종교적 상징성과 이야기의 힘이 치유의 원리로 작동함을 밝힌다. 이는 종교적 상징과 서사적 상상력이 트라우마를 재해석하고, 고통을 의미화함으로써 내적 치유를 가능하게 하는 텍스트적 장치임을 시사한다. 본 연 구는 <라이프 오브 파이>를 통해 문학·종교·영성·치유의 관계를 심층적으로 조 명함으로써 현대 치유 담론의 확장 가능성을 제시하고자 한다.
