The purpose of this thesis is to examine the Catholicism’s response to the historical calamity in Ji-yong Jeong’s literature. His religious poetry follows the genealogy of St. Augustine’s Confessions. Heidegger in Phenomenology of the Religious Life discussed St. Augustine’s Confessions from the perspective of phenomenology. In this thesis, I also discuss Ji-yong Jeong’s religious poetry from the perspective of Heidegger’s phenomenology. In the second chapter, I discuss the meaning of ‘pain’ and ‘sorrow’ in the religious poetry. In the first section, I interpret Deathbed and Grace. The pain refers to the essence of life. In the second section, I interpret Tragedy and Phoenix. The sorrow refers to paradoxical joy. In the third chapter, I discuss the meaning of the historical sense in his religious poetry. In the first section, I interpret Galilean Sea, His Half, and Sad Idol to shed light on the religious response to historical calamity. In the second section, I interpret Victor Gim Andrea, Other Heaven, Another Sun and Tree to shed light on Catholic martyrs.

이 논문 ｢정지용 가톨리시즘의 역사적 재난에 대한 대응｣의 목적은 정지용종교시의 역사적 대응의 의미를 밝히는 것이다. 이 논문은 세계 가톨리시즘 문학의 계보에서 정지용의 종교시가 아우렐리우스 아우구스티누스의 『고백록』을 계승한 것으로 보는 데서 출발한다. 이러한 관점에서 2장에서는 하이데거의 『종교적 삶의 현상학』을 원용하여 정지용 종교시의 ‘고통’과 ‘비애’의 의미에 대해 논의하였다. 1절에서는 ｢임종｣과 ｢은혜｣의 해석을 통해 인간은 자신의 삶의 본질에 다가갈수록 고통을 느낄 수밖에 없으며, 고통의 극한에서 신을 요청하는 것으로 보았다. 2절에서는 ｢비극｣과 ｢불사조｣의 해석을 통해 종교시의 비애는 구원을 통해 기쁨을 얻게 되는, 역설적 비애인 것으로 보았다. 나아가 3장에서는 종교시의 역사의식의 의미를 논구하였다. 1절에서는 ｢갈리레아 바다｣, ｢그의 반｣, ｢슬픈 우상｣ 이 현해탄의 역사적 의미를 종교적 상상력으로 극복한 것으로 보았다. 2절에서는 ｢승리자 김안드레아｣, ｢다른 한울｣, ｢또 다른 태양｣, ｢나무｣에 나타난 순교의 역사적 의미를 밝혔다. 결론적으로 정지용의 가톨리시즘은 역사적 재난 가운데서 인간의 내면을 옹호하였음을 밝혔다. 나아가 한국의 가톨리시즘 종교시에 대한 연구를 차후과제로 남겼다.
