This paper aims to read Doris Lessing’s religious view represented by Moses in The Grass Is Singing. Moses, who is the killer of his white hostess, Mary, in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), has been examined as a victim of racism or an embodiment of Mary’s suppressed sexual desire. Focused on the Christian meaning of his biblical namesake, this paper attempts to see Moses as a savior who frees Mary from the white community filled with falsehood and hypocrisy. The connection to Christianity in The Grass Is Singing is shown in that Moses is a mission boy and Mary’s husband is called Jonah due to his bad luck and weakness. That Moses makes Mary bleed is also associated with a sacrifice in the Biblical meaning. This paper highlights Lessing’s intention to deliver her religious view using a black native, which is against the current Christianity. With this approach, this paper suggests Lessing’s religious view that religions should embrace both light and dark aspects, unlike the light-biased Christianity.

이 논문에서는 『풀잎은 노래한다』에 재현된 모세를 통해 레싱의 종교적 관점을 살펴보고자 한다. 백인 여주인 메리의 살해범으로 등장하는 모세는 주로 흑백 갈등에 의한 문제와 성적 욕망의 대상으로 해석되어 왔다. 본 논문은 모세의 기독교적 이름에 근거해서 모세가 이집트에서 히브리족을 구출하듯이 모세가 위선에 찬 백인 공동체에서 메리를 해방시키는 구원자로 읽고자 했다. 『풀잎은 노래한다』를 기독교적 관점으로 읽을 수 있는 단서는 모세가 미션스쿨 출신으로 영어를 구사하고, 메리의 무능하고 불운한 남편을 요나로 설정한 것에서 볼 수 있다. 또 레싱은 메리와 모세가 피 흘림을 통해 만나도록 설정하여 기독교에서 희생제물을 통해 죄를 용서받는다는 상징적 의미와 연계시킨다. 특히, 주목할 점은 레싱이 흑인 모세를 통해 제도와 교리만을 강조하는 편향된 기독교의 관점을 비판하고자 한 것이다. 이런 점에서 『풀잎은 노래한다』는 기존 종교와는 다른 빛과 어둠의 양면을 수용하는 레싱의 종교적 관점이 반영된 작품이라 할 수 있다.
