Dong-ri Kim’s “San Hwa” (1936) is a Feng Shui-related short novel. According to Feng Shui, the geographical background of “San Hwa” is inhabitable. The high southern mountains of the village possess sprit of fire, so it can easily break out a forest fire and easily lead to drought. A defender of this village, Tae Pyoung E, possesses sprit of water and he works for Yoon’s charcoal kiln. One day, the antagonist Yoon sells beef from a dead cow to poor villagers leading half the villagers to die from food poisoning. Tae Pyoung E collapses as well which leads to dramatic diminish of the sprit of water. The rest of villagers are driven to payback Yoon’s behavior by destroying his charcoal kiln and setting a fire. When the village falls into utter confusion, another deadly fire in the huge mountain beyond the southern mountain spreads to the village. This fire is a divine authority power, whose sweeping destruction is interpreted as the Goddess’s will for recreation.

｢산화｣는 풍수지리적인 단편 소설이다. ｢산화｣의 공간 뒷골은 풍수적으로 보아 화기(火氣)가 많아 좋지 않으며, 이를 겨우 살게 하는 것은 수기(水氣)의 형상화로서 ‘뒷실이’의 존재이다. 그러나 죽은 소까지 고기로 팔아치우는 윤참봉의 악행으로 마을 사람의 절반이 죽어간다. 뒷실이도 사경을 헤매는데, 이는 수기(水氣)의 약화를 의미하는 것이다. 분노한 사람들은 불을 내고 윤참봉에게 복수를 하러 몰려간다. 마을이 혼란에 빠지자, 그동안 파국의 전조로 생각되던 저 너머 홍하산의 산불이 운문산으로 번져 내려온다. 한편, 최창조가 재구성하고자 하는 도선의 전통풍수와 마찬가지로 김동리의 공간인식은 모성적인 것으로 이해되는데, 김동리는 ‘산화’의 산불을 농민들의 분노라 해석하는 동시에, 모자 이자관계의 황홀경에서 보았던 초파일의 연등이라는 선문답을 하기도 한다. 이는 폭력의 심급과 젠더성에 대한 고찰을 하도록 한다. 한쇠를 중심으로 읽으면 ｢산화｣의 산불은 저항적인 것이 된다. 그러나 뒷실이를 중심으로 읽으면 산불은 인간의 모든 것을 멸하는 모성적인 신적 폭력이 된다. 후자의 독법은 김동리가 제3르네상스를 추구했던 것과 일맥상통하는 것이라 할 수 있다.
