The Myth of Il-sung Kim in North Korea is an important case epitomizing the phenomenon that the myths are still being produced and exerting a powerful force even in a modern society. The myth of Il-sung Kim was created when several relevant conditions, which bewilder North Koreans after the abrupt liberation, the people’s aspiration to overcome such chaotic state, and their longing for a transcendental figure, met the political program of the North Korea’s regime. The myth of Il-sung Kim has attributes of both national foundation myth and hero myth. Il-sung Kim was depicted as ‘the Sun of the Nation’ in the myth, which granted him a state: ‘Founder’ of the nation’s birth. And the myth of Il-sung Kim has a feature of a national foundation myth based on sacredness of space because it emphasizes the symbolism of Baekdu-san. Also, the myth of Il-sung Kim is a hero myth in that it overemphasizes his extraordinary physical ability of Il-sung Kim that was shown during the armed struggle against Japan. In order to praise Il-sung Kim as a cultural hero, the myth also highlights the figure’s achievements in land reformation and increasing productivity across the industries.
