There is a controversy that George Herbert’s view of religion is ambiguous, and his poem “The British Church” is difficult to harmonize with his poetry The Temple. To understand his view of religion and this poem, it is based on the history of England in the 17th century and the biography of Herbert. At that time, there was an external conflict between the Roman Church - the Church of England - the Amsterdam Church, and internal one between the Avant garde Conformists - the Calvinist Conformists and Conforming Puritans - Non-Conforming Puritans. Kings were Arminians, but Herbert and his family were Calvinists, so Herbert’s poetry had ambiguity due to the government’s repression. Therefore, “The British Church” is open to two interpretations; in the external point of view, “She on the hill”, “She in the valley”, and “Mother” in “the British Church” each respectively represents the Roman Church, the Amsterdam Church, and the Church of England in Europe, and internally represents the Avant garde Conformists, the Non-Conforming Puritans, and the Calvinist Conformists and Conforming Puritans in Britain.
