Gu-ha Kim’s Spirituality and Direction of Reform during the Japanese Colonial Period

Kim Su ah

Abstract

This paper aims at exploring the spirituality and direction of reform conducted by Gu-ha Kim, who preceded the reformation of Modern Korean Buddhism and the renovation of the Tongdosa temple during the Japanese Colonial Period. Gu-ha Kim is considered the father of the restored Korean Buddhist order and Tongdosa in terms of practice, education, and propagation after 1908. In this paper, the primary objective was to discover the nature and management of his reform based on two approaches: the practice of asceticism and the thought of reform of establishing the identity of Modern Korean Buddhism during the Japanese Colonial Period. It was decided that his intended direction of reform succeeded to the traditional Korean Buddhism and the jurisprudence of the mundane world for propagation. Especially, the former was patterned after the life of exercise associated with tranquility and wisdom organized by Zen master Kyonghe, and the latter was determined by the reformist spirit of Bomlan who suggested progressive, significant, and specific ways of reform.
